Brandywine, MD heavyweight Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell battled to a four-round split-decision draw against fellow undefeated boxer and last-minute sub Alvaro Morales of Las Vegas last night in Cabazon, CA. Mitchell fought in a swing bout after the Joel Casamayor - Michael Katsidis tussle.
According to onlookers I have talked to, Mitchell fought well on the outside but, at times, let Morales perform well on the inside.
With the draw, Mitchell is now 2-0-1, one KO. Morales, who won a bout seven days ago in Ontario, CA, is now 2-0-4.
What a dumb move!!!
ReplyDeleteNot good! I see the guy Seth had a draw with also had a draw with the former UNLV basketball player Kambala. I am sure that Seth's contract with Golden Boy has some type of "escape clause" based on a "poor performance". I know it sounds harsh but that's the way these big timers like Golden Boy, King, Arum, etc. - that's the way they roll. Seth may be back here before you know it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Chris Middendorf can shed some light on the way promotional contracts are worded in a general sense. Not referring specifically to Seth Mitchell b/c I don't think Chris M. had anything to do with that contract, but in general how are promotional contracts worded in the event a boxers loses, puts in a poor performance, etc.?
Seth's contract stated that if he were to recieve a draw or a loss, his contract would end immediatly.
ReplyDeleteTherefore, you are most likely correct, Seth will be boxing in his hometown of Baltimore real soon. Yes he has blown the deal with Golden Boy, however, it is not all Seth's fault. Someone did not do their homework.
Bullcrap! There was no homework to be done. The guy he boxed was 2-4 and had been knocked out several times recently. Furthermore, he had no amateur background what-so-ever. Should have stayed in B-more!
ReplyDeleteJake would have made him a super-star. Actually he did wonders with him in just 2 fights. Perhaps, it's not too late. Adrian Davis is a decent trainer, but made a big mistake leaving Baltimore.
IT IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteArena Football-here we come.....
Did Seth win the Golden Gloves Nationals in 06?
ReplyDeleteNo-seth only had 6 amteur fights.
ReplyDeletehe will be back. he is a warrior.
Gilbert,
ReplyDeleteHow would Jake make him a superstar? Has Jake ever produced any known superstars? Seth had a chance of a lifetime, he blew it. If he's lucky he can be the new stop gate for the NC loser's silly enough to make the trip to bmore.
Look People, everyone has a bad night. Seth will be back, he really has never lost an amateur fight or a pro fight. Everyone knows he beat Bo for real. If Golden Boy releases him, it's their loss. Seth will rise to the top. His manager is also learning along with Seth. Give the guys a break. Who cares if Golden Boy let him go. His hometown Baltimore will pick him up and start all over and together they will become a world champion. You heard it here first. Jake The Snake makes things happen. His record speaks for itself. Look at what he has done for guys they are not even nearly as good as Seth. Come back home Seth. We miss you and we will stand by you. It's Oscar's loss not yours.
ReplyDeleteTeam Mitchell blew it. The fat lady has sung. Seth is 28 years old. he has lost to a guy who has been KO'd in his last 4 fights.
ReplyDeleteEven a rematch is out of the question. Seth has had only 6 amateur fights with boxers who was having their first fight. Someone has tried to move him too fast.
Trying to take the easy way out.
Team Mitchell needed to steal a page out of Thomas Snow's book.
Snow has thus far did the right thing. He has smart people behind him and he could careless what others think. Snow is 12-0 with 10 ko's to his credit. Everyone told Adrian Davis he was moving Sethh too fast, but he refused to listen.
Now look at what you have done.
Domo Wade is next-watch what I am talking about.
Adrian Davis is not Seth's manager.
ReplyDeleteYou are blaming the wrong person.
Snow is fighting Samuel in a few weeks, isn't he? Could be in tough.
ReplyDeleteWhoa People- relax here.
ReplyDeleteFirst, the guy that Seth had a draw with was not 2-4 and had not been knocked out. His record stands at 2-0 and 4 draws for goodness sakes. Check the boxrec first. Alvaro Morales unfortunately was a credible opponent. I matched his first two fights for him on two cards in Reno, Nevada. Coincientally, each ended as a draw. Although a little on the short side at probably 5'10, Alvaro was a tough kid with pretty good boxing skills. His two wins were over a guy 2-0 and a guy 2-1.
Also I am sure that it is up to Golden Boy if they want to continue their relationship with Seth Mitchell. But one would hope that having a draw with a last second replacement with no knowledge of styles etc. would not turn them off and that they would show some patience and bring him along slowly. He has had so few amateur fights, he definitely deserves another look and a probably 25-30 fights to develop.
When managing a a boxer that you feel has the potential to be a contender, you can not afford to learn at the fighters expenses. If you don't have the answers you get the answers and you ask and listen and sift through all the information till you feel that you are making a good carreer move for the fighter. Yes, Jake would have looked out for Seth until he had a good foundation. But after that you still must be carefull not to blow it with a bad choice. If you look at Tony Thompson, you have the same type of senario, not a lot of amateur experience and he had to get on the learning track fast at the age he started. It would have been a good idea to follow the template that Tony's team created. It was right there to look at. Golden Boy had the opportunity to test Seth early and cut thier losses early, or move him faster if it proved out, all at the expense of his carreer. I wish Seth the best and hope he can regroup. He is a worrior, but needs to build that base a little slower at the risk of less exposure early on. A carreer can only afford so many mistakes.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I feel I have to ask that you READ the posts I put up.
ReplyDeleteIf you read the post, you would have noticed that Seth's opponent was a LAST-MINUTE SUB! Morales was the third person listed as Mitchell's opponent.
As Chris pointed out, Morales's record was 2-0-4, he had no knockouts and four draws. I really don't think Mitchell's manager, Sharif Salim (Adrian Davis's brother) would have originally wanted to put Mitchell in with another undefeated boxer unless he had to.
Nor do I think they would sign a contract that would have a clause that said if he loses, the contract is cancelled. All that would do is put too much added pressure on a fighter. I could be wrong about that, but I'd fail to see the advantage in that, especially with someone who doesn't have a long amateur career.
....With tony starting at such an late age with little to no amateure experience...really just proves he has natural ability, hes a studies the science, and hes extremely hungry...You only get one shot...
ReplyDeleteGary,
ReplyDeleteSeth's promotional contract probably doesn't say anything specifically about wins, losses, or draws - but I can almost guarantee without seeing the contract first hand that Golden Boy has some type of "out clause" that allows them to release Mitchell for almost anything - if he loses, if he draws, heck, even if he wins and puts up a horrible showing. Or, if he fails to perform the necessary roadwork, sparring, etc. I hate to say it, but I think Seth and Golden Boy are history! And, if some of these posts are correct, Seth had a draw with a guy with a limited background and is 5'10". Also, if BoxRec is correct the lowest this guy Morales ever weighed for a fight is 266! At 5'10" and weighing 266 lbs.! Not good, not good at all.
Please let the readers know what fighters Jake Smith has developped and have gone on to success outside of the Beltway. Somehow with all the great fighters this area has produced, I can't think of one.
ReplyDeleteAs I mentioned before, Alvaro Morales at 2-0 with 4 draws was no bum. He was a decent fighter with more experiance than Seth. So do not go writing someone's career off for a draw against this guy.
ReplyDeleteChris,
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right. Golden Boy won't get rid of Mitchell just yet. His 4 round minimum probably isn't a whole lot of money, they aren't losing much. I think they'll give him at least one more shot against similar opposition and if he struggles, that's probably all she wrote. And Digital, as far as them signing a contract that says so and so, if they had enough money waived in their faces, they would have signed anything!
instead of surmising and assuming, just ask his camp what the contract says.
ReplyDeletebetter yet, his publicist.
That's a good point. Digital, why don't you ask Mitchell if the draw affects his promotional status with Golden Boy?
ReplyDeleteSharif Salim real name Samuel Davis
ReplyDeleteneeds to have a meeting with Tom Browner and learn the correct way to bring a fighter up who has no amateur background. Tom Browner directed Tony Thompson from the very beginning and now he is in line for a title shot against Klitsco. The only problem I see here, is that it may be too late for even Tom Browner to save Seth Mitchell's so called carrer. And yes it is true, Golden Boy has released Seth Mitchell as of Monday aprox: 1:00pm. Now that does not mean that Seth Mitchell cannot get back on the winning track and make himself a few dollars. He can always box some of the crew from North Carolina and get a few wins under his belt.
The word is-Seth has called it quits, but I think that would be a huge mistake. I think he needs to start over and box in his hometown of B-more MD. He does sell tickets and it would not be too hard to find other heavy weights with no amateur experiance to box him.
He just needs someone to pick his fights for him. Samuel Davis is in for the money and it seems that he wants fast money and he wants it yesterday. Take my advice-go see Tom Browner. The man did wonders with Tony Thompson. Actually Jake Smith is the top promoter around here right now and it would probably be a good idea if Samuel Davis would turn Seth Mitchell over to him. From what I understand-Jake was helping him in the beginning-perhaps he should of stayed with Jake. Why try to fix something that is not broke???
i know you guys will help me understand this. with seth's record.....

.... why was he released from GBoy? and why is everyone saying this kat doesn't have a decent career, and more importantly, a decent chance?
who releases a boxer like this? (or did he, as you said, leave GBoy?) which is it?
... and finally, can't we just get a statement from GBoy? dag! how hard is that?
ReplyDeletePublicist? Your turn. Or did you bail on Seth too.
ReplyDeleteYou have named 10 amateur matches that Seth Mitchell has had. Nine of them were with guys who were having their first fight and 8 of them have never boxed since. Now you named one that was an open class fighter (BO) and Seth lost that match 5-0. That's why GBP released him earlier today.
ReplyDeleteAs somebody in the know, Mitchell was going to fight Tony Sanchez, who to put it nicely "got cold feet" and talked his way out of the fight, and decided to retire at 0-1.
ReplyDeleteEnter Morales who trust me he can fight. He won a national junior olympic championship and had over 150 amateur fights. He was a 2003 national gg semifinalist at super heavyweight.
Golden Boy did not want to put mitchell in so tough trust me. i actually thought mitchell would lose to this guy, but he got a draw just like everybody else does with this guy.
In the Mitchell Vs Mitchell amateur bout Brandon was an open class boxer with pretty good skills. Many thought Brandon was ahead on points going into the 4th, but got caught with a big right that put his tooth through is bottom lip. It was bleeding so bad that they stopped it. I do not know what the score card said. Brandon had less that 15 amateur bouts. Bottom line is that Seth can get back on track with the right game plan, and this whole thing can make him a better smarter and strong fighter. Seth, don't ever give up on yourself just because some one else may have given up on you.
ReplyDeleteIf only the reporter would report this info, instead of leaving it up to the readers to do so.
ReplyDeletethere are so many versions of what the deal is, I don't know which is right, or wrong.
seth is a fucking bumb
ReplyDeletewat fighter turns pro with only 10 amature fights in the novice-division..i mean he should have at LEAST waited until he turned open...and GOLDEN BOY made a mistake when they signed him..they should have at least checked his expierence level in the amatures
Holy Cow! I just seen Josh Hall on youtube dancing around drunk in his speedos. You Go Josh! We love you baby....

dude.

ReplyDeleteGary,
ReplyDeleteYou have to get a interview with Tony soon. Let him know we back him 100%!!
Is there any Chris Middendorf clause in local contracts? A clause that says, "when he rips you off and he will, you can get rid of him as your promoter and manager"? He owes me 3435.00 from three fights I had at the ballroom and won two of them.
ReplyDeleteSilk the Shocker
Champion
Silk, Please provide more info. How exactly did he rip you off?
ReplyDeleteAbove and beyond the fact that there is no one who I have ever ripped off in the boxing business, and beyond the fact that there is no one that I have ever heard of called Silk, who is a champion or not, lets go straight to the obvious facts as to how and why I cannot rip anybody off in the business.
ReplyDeleteWhen you fight in Maryland, you sign the State bout agreement twice. The first time is by fax when I first set up the fight. It has the fighters name, the opponents name, the weight, the date and the purse. At the weighin, the State requires that they receive an original document that has the signatures of the fighter, his manager and the promoter. So "Silk" would sign a contract that agrees that he will be paid x amount and that is signed by his manager as well as by Mike or Scott Wagner and those contracts are given to the commission. After the fight, as per that agreement, the promoter must pay "Silk" exactly the amount that it is on that contract, less the insurance deduction of $20. that the Wagner's take out to purchase additional insurance to protect the fighter.
If there is a dispute and the fighter feels that he is not getting what has been agreed to, the commission is right there and he can complain. If "Silk" has been ripped off, all he has to do is ask the Executive Director, Patrick Pannella, who is usually right there and tell him and Patrick will certainly deal with it immediately and because he has the lawyer for the commission there, any question can be answered. If anyone, including "Silk" wants to bring forward a legitimate complaint against me, just call Pannella at 410 230 6223 and bring it up with him. If anyone is owed any money by me or the Ballroom, then let him know and he will deal with it directly.
But the facts are that there has never been a complaint that I can remember about someone that did not get paid. So "Silk" is lying, and does not have the balls to put his name out there.
And finally as the matchmaker on the Ballroom shows I am paid by the Ballroom, not by any fighters. All agreements are between Ballroom Boxing and the fighter and are signed agreements as mentioned above. So I am not part of any financial arrangement that involves any fighter that fights or has ever fought at the Ballroom. Technically, I can be hired by a manager as a consultant, to advise him on his choice of opponents for fights. But there is no way that I can be involved in the money loop in anyway that I could screw any fighter out of what they were due for his or her purse.
If "Silk" has any more lies to tell, that is his prerogative. Or if he wants to be a man about something like this, before he goes around defaming me or anyone else, call the State Commission and show us some proof.
"Silk," the balls in your court.
ReplyDeleteUnless you can provide proof that you have been ripped off, your original comment will be taken off.
Damn Silk Gary said the balls are in your court man. Keep your balls in your pants and stop lying.
ReplyDeleteChris is honest and should run for a state seat in the Senate.
I went through every Ballroom Boxing card that I had made the matches for and pulled out all boxers who fought there exactly three times. I found a total of 6. Of those six fighters, five of them were undefeated in their three fights at the Ballroom and one was 1-1-1.
ReplyDeleteSo whoever "Silk" is,he is lying. We do not need him to come forward with proof, as there is no one who matches the description of himself that he gave the blog.
Listen, Chris isn't the easiest guy in the world to deal with but that's part of his job description, no? He's supposed to make competitive fights that won't break the promoter's budget. He's a tough negotiator and you're not going to get one over on him when it comes to money. I'm sure he didn't take any of "Silk's" money, or anyone else's for that matter. So what if you don't like him or think he's arrogant. That's your own insecurity speaking. He's a professional, he's organized, and in my limited dealings with him, he's been honest. So what, you're not best friends with the guy! Big deal! Can you do business with him, that's the question? That's also the sign of someone who has sense, is a professional, and has a firm grasp of who they are and what they want to accomplish. Keep doing what you're doing Chris. In my dealings with you, you have been one of the straight guys in boxing.
