Thompson is Number One WBO Contender!

DC heavyweight Tony "The Tiger" Thompson is now the WBO's mandatory number one heavyweight contender. Thompson scored a fifth-round technical knockout over Luan Krasniqi in Hamburg, Germany in a WBO title elimination bout.

According to Fightnews.com, Krasniqi had good results with his right hand against the awkward southpaw Thompson in round one. Thompson stepped up the pressure and dominated the first half of round two, although Krasniqi rallied late. Both fighters landed good leather in round three in what was unfolding as an action-packed bout. Thompson punished a suddenly passive Krasniqi in rounds four and five with an almost non-stop barrage of jabs and the bout was stopped by referee Mark Nelson with 21 seconds left in the round although Krasniqi was not particularly hurt.

Thompson is now 30-1, 18 KO's while Krasniqi falls to 30-3-1, 14 KO's.

  1. Nice!!! So, Digital, how do you think Tiger's chances are against the WBO champ?

  2. I think Thompson can take Sultan Ibragimov. Tony's brimming with so much confidence that I think he can beat just about anybody at this stage.

Whether Thompson gets the shot immediately remains to be seen because Ibragimov is scheduled to face WBA champ Ruslan Chagaev in a unification bout. Hopefully, Thompson will be in line to face the winner.

  3. Great win for Thompson! I wonder if this puts him on the short list as an opponent for Wladimir Klitschko later this year? Tony now has a name in Germany where Wlad mostly fights and comes cheaper than Rahman or Holyfield.

  6. Tony dominated Krasniqi! Krasniqi is a good fighter and Tony beat him with ease! I thought the stoppage was a bit premature but the ending was a foregone conclusion anyway the way Thompson was bringing it! I would love to see Tony with either Klitschko. I think Tony stops Wladimir and beats Vitali by decision. Great job Tony!

  7. Well, if Chagaev wins, then I'm guessing Sultan gets the rematch, but wouldn't Tiger then be next in line?
