Smith Loses by Stoppage in Florida!

DC junior middleweight Luther "Sugarman" Smith lost by fourth-round TKO to Miami's David Estrada last night in West Palm Beach, FL.

My colleague Randy Hammonds of Floridaboxingnews.com called the bout target practice for Estrada as he hurt Smith with head and body shots, resulting in a knockdown in the third round. Estrada continued the assault until referee Frank Gentile stopped the bout at 1:25 of the fourth.

Smith is now 22-5-2, 12 KO's while Estrada rises to 21-3, 12 KO's.

  1. Honestly speaking I feel Luther's handler's should not have accepted a fight like that. He's coming off a prior knockout loss. Easier opposition is what he needed. I mean he probably never regained his confidence. Some trainers as well as fighters chase the money instead of putting people in their corner who has their best interest at heart and who make sure that they're getting what they need.
Luther has the skill and the heart but if you have one goal and your team (meaning trainer/manager) have different the road is set for destruction.

  2. I agree with Puffy's statement, but Luther was never anything more than a D+ level fighter like most are from this area. There are a few exceptions, but even the big boys, could never beat the A level fighters and lost.

Ie.... Joppy, Mitchell, Holmes, Green, and so on. Now the only one that did from here, was Mark Johnson, but he could never get that superfight to really push him over to the mainstream, but he will go int the IBHOF for sure.

  5. Luther Smith can still fight. He just needs management before he gets used up.
