The Russell legacy continues in amateur boxing. Capitol Heights, MD lightweight Gary Russell III (also known as Gary A. Russell and Allen to his close friends) won the lightweight championship at the Midwestern Trials on April 7 in Cincinnati, OH.
Russell defeated Miguel Gonzalez of Cleveland OH, 27-15 to win the title and advance to the US Championships in Colorado Springs, CO in June. Russell won a silver medal in the 2006 Junior Olympics.
Russell's older brother -- Gary Russell, Jr. -- is the top-ranked bantamweight in the country and is a favorite to make the 2008 United States Olympic team.
Congratulations also to Salisbury, MD middleweight Fernando Guerrero, who advanced to the US Championships by winning the middleweight title defeating 2006 Under-19 National Champion Shawn Porter of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, 29-19.
Another Beltway amateur -- Abodurin Akinyanju of DC -- lost in the super heavyweight final to 2006 National Golden Gloves Champion Felix Stewart of Columbus, OH, 21-18.
Congradulation Fernando Guerraero, I knew you would do well. I thought you had a close bout with Dominic Wade in the Golden Gloves.
ReplyDeleteThat was great for you considering Dominic Wade is the best amature boxer to ever come out of the MD/DC area. He is better than Sugar Ray Leonard was at this age and is most likely the favorite to win the 2008 Olympics. Not to mention he has an all time great trainer in Adrian Davis from Round 1. He has to spar pros every day because there are no amatures that will step in the ring with this kid. Remember where you heard it first.
I agree with you concerning Dominic Wade, but lets not forget Thomas Williams. He has to be ranked second in the area as an amature.
ReplyDeleteDominanic Wade--yes he is the best in the country right now, but Thomas Williams--NOT!!!
ReplyDeleteRussell Gaskins boxes at of Hillcrest and is still too young for us to know much...
ReplyDeleteI agree this kid is the real deal. At the age of 16 it was a lot of fighters around here that was better than him but let's not compare its a new era. Adrain coaching is ok.
ReplyDeleteDominic Wade will man-handle any other amature around here with ease. Everyone knows it! You better ask somebody$$$$
ReplyDeleteOh, he was absolutely tearing my friend up, and my friend isn't a bad fighter.
ReplyDeleteI agree that if the kid keeps his head right and works, his potential is unlimited.
hey the headbangers have a kid that will give Dominic some work he is 15 people say this kid is nice and he spar pros too i would love to see them work
ReplyDeleteheadbangers does not have anyone that will spar Dominic Wade, we have take him over there several times and no one will spar him. not even the peterson brothers.
ReplyDeletetrust me. they do not have anyone, especially a 15 year old.
You guys have no idea what you are talking about. There are plenty of people who will spar with Wade.
ReplyDeleteThe question is: Will Wade spar them??? And if he does spar them, can he last 3 rounds without getting tired? From what I have seen, the answer is NO!
if anyone locally makes the 2008 olymipics, it will be Dominic Wade.
ReplyDeletethere is no one around that has the total boxing package of the boxer who is trained By Adrian Davis of Round One boxing located in Bladenburg Maryland. All the other trying for 2008 are just pissing in the wind. Trust me, i've been there-done that....
i aint know all these fighters, but i here about the domicin wade boxer all the time. he really must be the best out there. does anyone know when he will fight again around near bowie md. i would like to see him.
ReplyDeletehe wont, nobody will fight him!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI talked to Dominic today and he will be fighting this Friday in Waldorf at the Regional Golden Gloves championships.
ReplyDeleteWho is the kid that was in the magazine with barry? Is he the real deal let me know his name I was at SRL gym for the Guerraero vs wade fight Wade got the home cooking i talk to people after the said Gurraero win the fight
ReplyDeleteGuerrareo did win the fight at Sugar Ray Leonards, But Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder just happen to be judging that night.
ReplyDeleteThe entire crowd booed, even Adrian Davis thought Wade lost.
Wade told everyone that he knew had lost but it is not his fault that they were boxing in his neck of the woods. Wade still can beat anyone in the Potomic Vallie Organzation, Guerraero boxes out of the Shanandoe Valley Organzation.
who was the guy that box dominic this past friday from va, seem to be very good
ReplyDeletethats funny the peterson brothers wont spar wade i have tape to shut mouths he's good but dam what was lamont doing at the age of 16 whupping pros ask the people at rd1 about that and they taught the boy a leason when he spared them ask AD why they didnt want to come back HB scared give me a break stop hating dog
