Prepare for 'Magnificent May Along The Beltway!"

There is so much pro news coming down the pike that I'm going to try to get it all in here. I will get to what the headline of this story means in just a little bit.

First, the bout between Hasim Rahman and Ray Mercer is off. Apparently, Mercer took a better offer for a mixed martial arts contest. The bout was slated for Thursday, June 14 on the Versus Network. Rahman will still appear on that date but they are looking for a new opponent.

The Thursday, April 19 Ballroom Boxing card at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie is slated to feature another appearance by Carson McCourry. More on that one when I get more information.

A couple of media items: The newest issue of the Washington City Paper features an article on DC heavyweight Marion "Jackhammer" Wilson. "Cheap Seats" writer Dave McKenna asked me some questions about Wilson and I am quoted in this very nice article. Here is the link:

Also tomorrow, I will be a guest on the national radio boxing program "Through The Ropes" with Marc Lichtenfeld. The show airs on the Sports Byline USA network at 9 pm ET. I am scheduled to be on around 9:40 pm. The show does not air on radio in the Beltway area, but go to Fightnews.com tomorrow and there will be an audio link to the program and you can hear it on your computer.

Now to the main part of this information. May of 2007 looks like it will be one of the most exciting months in recent Beltway Boxing history. We've already talked about the cards at DuBurns Arena in Baltimore on Friday, May 11 and at the George Mason University Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA on Saturday, May 12.

Now comes this word. There will be another big card in the area on Friday, May 25. Right now, I can't tell you a lot about this card publicly at this point because there are some minor loose ends to be worked out. This is what I CAN say about this show at this point:

1. It will take place in DC (one of the loose ends is officially where it will be).

2. It will be a nationally televised ESPN2 event.

As soon as I can publicly say more, you will be the first to know. I promise you this though: from what I've been told privately, this will be another monster card!

So what we have is a month featuring three major cards where all three areas of the Beltway (Baltimore, Northern Virginia and DC) are ALL represented!
I can't remember the last time this has happened!

This is why I have called the fifth month of this year "The Magnificent May Along The Beltway!" You will be hearing a lot more about all three of the May cards in the weeks to come!

  1. Nationally televised? Sweet!!! And by in DC, is that DC proper, or the DC area? Verizon Center maybe???

  2. ESPN doesn't provide nearly enough cash to use the Verizon Center. I'd expect DC Armory. Digital is right though, from what i've heard this card is going to be a monster. Hopefully the folks come out to DC like they do for Jimmy.
