Three Thousand Strong Greet De La Hoya & Mayweather!

Beltway Boxing fans! You came out in full force today for the press conference hyping the May 5 matchup between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. at Union Station in DC. An estimated 3,000 people showed up to watch the two superstars verbally duel. According to representatives involved with the press tour, this was the biggest turnout thus far. Remember, they were in New York and Philadelphia prior to DC.

Granted, a lot of people who were there came across the event by accident, but there were some true Beltway Boxing fans in attendance. It was so nice to see DC come out in nice numbers today. Well done!!!

  2. Gary It was A W E S O M E!!!! I came away from it a huge Mayweather fan... I was very impressed with the fact that he was so engaging with the fans and that he stayed LONG after de la Hoya disappeared and signed autographs and chatted with the fans. That he is devastatingly gorgeous with one of the best bods (and as I heard one young lady proclaim about all the "bling") Whew! whew! whew!I will have pictures up shortly at http://photodawg1.smugmug.com/gallery/2498725

I was a little surprised there weren't more boxers there.

  6. Aw, c'mon Linda...*Lifts shirt ala Oscar & Floyd, only to reveal a very average-looking stomach* "Why have a 'six-pack' -- when you can have 'the keg' baby?" (LOL) And as far as all of Mayweather's 'bling', I'm quite sure all the ladies will be equally impressed a few years from now when he's broke...(LOL)

    * Ah, that was a bit uncalled for(it's late and I'm feeling a bit 'cynical') but so was little Floydy's preposterous proclamation of being "greater than Sugar Ray Robinson!" While he may have a good side to him Linda, and it was perhaps a bit tongue-in-cheek, you just don't say that. Even if you're joking, which I hope he was. Heck, even Ali himself never said THAT! Even the oppresive, haughty, imperious, and hyperbolic (I can't impress much with the abs, but how about the vocabulary?) Howard Cosell would denounce such zany 'delusions of grandeur' and blatantly offensive and slanderous rhetoric! ( *In Cosell voice: "Did-you-just-hear-what-the-brazen-and-trunculent-young-Mayweather-just-said-ladies-and-gentlemen???") LOL...

As for the "are you going to be there"? Yes, I will be "there". In front of the T.V, and with a beer in one hand and a slice of pizza in the other...;-)

  7. Biz...You will have to forgive me I am a photographer first and easily enchanted by the visual...I have always been put off by Mayweather's (what I perceived) outright arrogance, but he re-balanced that scale hugely yesterday with the patience and engagin attention he gave his fans. I have to be honest and say that really blew me away. He talked the boxing talk but stayed with the fans when De la Hoya seemed kind of bored and walked. I don't think Mayweather will ever be broke and even if he was...he would still be very fine! Yesterday he scored a huge Press KO!

  8. (Chuckle) Ah, I was just (half!) joking. But I do hear you on the latter. In all seriousness -- it's a bit of a shame that Floyd didn't show that charming, engaging, and likeable side to him a bit more often. Because he DOES indeed have it. And yeah, he is a handsome fellow. What I'm trying to say here is that he probably could have been really popular, and perhaps even 'transcended the sport' ala Leonard and De la hoya. But unfortunately he really got off on the wrong foot with his HBO "slave money/contract" remark, and it never really improved after that. (Until perhaps now) But yes...it's not as if this guy has a real 'aloof'/non-engaging personality ala Roy Jones. * Also -- he did really score high marks with me by his behavior during and after the Judah 'melee'. He was actually about the ONLY person involved (or as it was NOT involved) that came out of that whole ugly fiasco 'looking good'.

Keep up the good work BTW...:)

  9. I understand what you are saying...His attitude turned me off early on and I just about completely tuned him out until yesterday; and thank you for the kind words!
