  1. Good card last night, promoter's did a good job of keeping the night flowing. Tyrell Samuel looked to be the best fighter on the card, doing good bodywork. Needs to stay on local cards racking up wins, does pose a bit too much, paws w jab, and should show his handspeed more. Coleman was in tough, seems to lack the power to keep better fighters off, something just seems off with him. Needs to stay in ring. Big Phil Brown shows promise but is a long way from getting there, he still looks too heavy, tentative. Looks like a sucker for a good counter hook.
Derrell Coley wants to comeback in March? Said he has 10 to twelve fights left? Maybe he was inspired by a group of fighters that don't seem to show his past promise. He was a warrior, but his time is past. Way past.

  2. Derrell Coley was a great fighter in the early 90's its time he call it quit's.

  3. In Samuel's defense, he told me he hurt his hand in the second round. He usually shows more power than he did. But his competition level has risen. His last two bouts were against pretty good competition.

The same can be said for Tim Coleman. His last two bouts were against good competition in Jason Champion and Lanzas, whose record isn't spectacular but he does what he is supposed to do -- give the talented prospect some needed work.

I agree with your assessment on Brown, Southpaw.

I hope to be talking to Derrell about this "comeback" in the near future.

I thought Ron Boyd looked outstanding in his bout.

  4. Digital, you do a great service to local boxing, glad to see you ringside. IF not for you, wouldn't have known of card. Hope you talk DC out of what seems a whim of a comeback. DC was, as usual, more interested in the girls outside the ring than the action in it. Hunger seems gone...for boxing anyways.

FOr what it is worth from a mere fan, Boyd looks good but in his mid thirties is it too late?
Reginald Taylor was impressive, in shape and finished his bout with the best punch of night, albeit against an exhausted fighter. Love to see him fight Upshaw kid who beat Jackson. Don't see much in this game for Jackson, he doesn't have a lot of hand/foot speed, power, or effective aggressiveness. While he looks fit, physically seems small for lt heavy, he needs to get back down to super-middleweight.

Can't say enough about the promoter, unlike Jake's mismatch-mania in Bmore, these were all competitively matched. When is next keystone event?

  5. Appreciate the comments, Southpaw! I think Keystone is looking at sometime in April for their next show. Not sure where, though. It could be back at Suitland High School.

  6. Sorry I missed this one. Soutpaw is right, you singlehandily give local cards a shot to make ends meet, local media is silent. Coley talking comeback? Too Sweet going to change moniker to "too bad, so sad." He is a nightclub mainstay, and fighters don't get better working out in bars. Southpaw, for a "mere fan," your instincts are good. DIg, Who is the better prospect, Coleman or Samuels? What are your honest thoughts of a Coley comeback?

  7. McCombs, maybe you and Derrell can make your comebacks against each other? How bout a rematch with Tony Jeter?

  8. There are fighters, true warriors, who continue to fight past what should be the natural end of their careers, like Teddy Reid, and there are fighters like Coley who stopped being a warrior in the 7th round against Oscar. So Coley wants to come back not because he remains a warrior, but because he needs the money and the fame first. All his comeback would do would be to take up space on a card where a new Beltway boxer deserves a shot. Tell Coley to stick to stocking shelves at Home Depot.

  9. Jackson's seven wins have come over fighters with combined records of 18 wins and 32 losses. His five losses against fighters with records of 10 wins and one loss. So although he had put together a string of fights without a loss, it seems clear he is going to have trouble with anyone who can fight. And Upshaw was no world beater. If Jackson had made half an effort in the first two rounds and won one of those rounds on just one judge's card, the fight would have been a draw. And if the same effort had won him one of the first two on two judges cards he would have won the fight. Was he not warmed up? Did his trainer not have him ready? Or was he simply not in the fight? It is sad to see someone drop the ball like that.

  10. How could you criticize a fighter who actually has the balls to fight an undefeated fighter in his own hometown? Jackson doesn't have a big amateur background. He's not a spoiled prettyboy fighter either. He's just a guy who trains hard, takes on whoever the promoter puts in front of him, and fights hard for six rounds. You can say what you want about his opponents winning percentage, but give me a break, he puts on a good performance every time. He might not have the ability to win every fight, but i guarantee he will also never turn one down. Give credit where its due.

  11. Jackson didnt put on a good performance, he was flat. The fight did not appear as close in person as the judges reported it. This was a hometown split decision, if there is such a thing. I give the kid credit for fighting a tough fighter however he has NO future as a light heavyweight. He was very tenative and while he looked in shape he clearly lacks the skills to be a contender. This is not the game for him, better to say there he went then there he lay.

  12. Thanks again for the comments. I am very high on Tyrell Samuel. I think he has had a good first couple of years in his career. He is starting to step up in competition. His power is improving and had he not hurt his right hand last night, he may have been able to stop his opponent.

I like Coleman also. The difference is he has not shown the power I think he needs in the welterweight division. As I said before, he has also stepped up in competition and right now, he is finding it hard to finish as strong as he did earlier. Because of this, I think Samuel has a stronger upside at this stage.

I don't think Coley should come back. I think he will find out that the game has changed even in the time he has been out of action. He mentioned a possible fight against Jimmy Lange in the future. I would be surprised if that takes place anytime soon.

As far as Jackson is concerned, I do give him a lot of credit for going up against an undefeated boxer. Having said that, I don't think Jackson put on one of his better performances. He started way too slowly, he didn't listen to his corner who wanted him to pressure Upshaw. He didn't do that. Personally, I thought the bout was a draw, but I didn't think Jackson deserved a victory.

  13. Teddy Reid has been stopped 5 times in his career, he has not had the career Daryl Coley had who lost twice to wolrd class fighters (some say he was robbed against Carr). As you say Reid should have retired in 03, but didn't bc he needed the cash. Coley was a great fighter, however his comeback should not happen. But don't rip Coley for losing to Oscar, he was game, just overmatched by one of the game's greats. He did win four fights after that. Coley got his shot too late. That said, I would take DC's career over Reid's any day.

  14. I watched with interest as former 1 contender DC fluttered about the high school gym in a mink, talking about a "comeback" while ignoring the boxing in the ring in favor of young girls. He even entered the ring twice to talk about his comeback, lingering in a spotlight that long ago dimmed for him. Suitland is great for up and comers, but a long way from the forums DC fought in during his prime.

In contrast, Former world champion Vince Pettway was toiling in a corner for Tyrell Samuels, carrying his water bottles, quietly and confidently giving instructions to his protege. He reluctantly entered the ring for his well earned mention, never leaving the corner for the center of a ring he once owned. Vince simply raised his hand and quietly faded to the back of the gym to watch the rest of the card with his protege. Vince has found a way to use his ring skills to stay in the sport he loves without getting hurt.

DC should learn a lesson from VP, his glory in the ring is done as a fighter. He can recapture it if he can humble himself and help some young fighters achieve what he failed to achieve, a world championship.

DC was never as good as Vince during their respective careers, not because of talent, but because of discipline, focus and possibly love of boxing. Last night it seemed not much has changed.

  15. Well said Southpaw.

  16. Get on up and get, get down Southpaw. I will say this in all seriousness, Vincent Pettway has always been 100% pure class!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Nice piece Southpaw. Like the sun will rise in the morning, fighters who have long passed their prime will seek to recapture it and fail. Look at the card in Virginia, McCall-Wilson? Bring me young hungry prospects anytime for my money.

  18. Your need to tell DC to talk to Toosharp. Mark is trying to bring boxing back to DC mark said that he want to have a show in the area and fight on it as his farewell fight for his fans around Washington. Hey people on the blog did your know toosharps is trainning the quaterback for the Jaguars Byron Leftwitch. Hey I talked to Vincent P at the fights he talk a liltle slow DC why do you want to do this if you take it serious with the right fights you would be ok everybody else is fighting bums

  19. I wish Derrell all the best in all seriousness. As far as me and Jeter- that fight won't happen, I'm moving forward not backwards. Besides, I tried to get that on his last outing but had no luck. I wish him all the best as well.

  22. Mark is throwing a show that's cool let the young stars shine. The dc boxing scene is high on talent but very low on fightcards.

  23. Gary click my name and checkout my Blog. I would honor and value your feedback.

  24. Billy D,

I don't think that was Mark this time. Mark was in Las Vegas this weekend for the All-Star game. He wasn't at the show last Saturday.

  25. Cassandra White is back in town and says she is throwing another show. She swears she will not write all the boxers bad checks again. She still blames Juice for everything. I do not trust her and I refuse to box on her card.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Let me clear something up right now. I have talked to both Cassandra and Juice over this weekend. There is NOTHING wrong between them. No money changed hands between them. Both say there is no problem going on and everything that has been said is just a lot of talk.

It is true that Cassandra is working on another show in the future. But, once again, there is NOTHING wrong between her and Juice.

    That comes from the source.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If I box on Cassandra Whites show, I want to be paid in full first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Stop haiting on Cassandra she will bounce back just like her checks. Juice can I buy Ray Leonard joggin paints. You stole everything from him.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Juice never stole anything from Ray Leonard. Anything he has was given to him. Juice is most likely one of the few honest guys left in boxing. He does alot for these kids. He also donates money back to PVA boxing each and everytime he has a show. If it were not for Juice, there would be no shows at Ray Leonards Boxing Center located in Palmer Park Maryland.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hey Juice and Coley don't worry about what people say. They can't be man and say these things in your face so they use this blog. Everybody around the beltway are haiters. They talk bad and say lies on people who make a living fighting.
