One of the biggest regrets that I can think of in almost 19 years of covering Boxing Along The Beltway is that we never saw a bout between two of our premier champions: William Joppy and Keith Holmes. As you all know, both men held shares of the middleweight championship at the same time (Joppy -- WBA, Holmes -- WBC) The bout seemed to be a natural matchup that would have done solid box office in this area.
We were promised it numerous times. Both men turned it down for monetary reasons. Don King, who promoted both men at the time, first wanted it and then said it couldn't happen, especially in DC. So the bout never happened.
The new poll allows you to speculate on who would win a bout between Holmes and Joppy when both men were in their primes. Please make comments on this as you vote. This should make for some good discussion.

ReplyDeletehow about jessie nicklow vs tony cygan md state championship in about 6 month
ReplyDeleteHow about Chris Midendorfus vs Josh Hall? Matchmaker of the Beltway.
ReplyDeleteI like Josh over Chris by KO 2 min into the first round
ReplyDeleteJosh Hall in 2 min of the first round? Are you crazy, how about 2 sec of the first round.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Mark and Clarence are realated and highly doubt that they'd ever fight. As far as Nicklow and Cgan, they are out of the same stable so that wouldn't make sense. Joppy vs. Holmes, whew, tough one. Maybe a slight edge to Holmes based on his chin.
ReplyDeleteNicklow-Cygan--That would be a very exciting fight. The have sparred many rounds already against each other, so there should be no feeling out round, just get right down to business. Anonymous--do you know something about this potential bout.
ReplyDeleteJosh Hall-Midendorf, lol, thats pretty funny, i like the humor.
Bull
I gotta tell you, I think Josh Hall is a bad dude! Ever see the cranium on that guy? I think you could hit him with a 2 X 4 and he'd laugh at you. Middendorf would have no chance at all. Heck, I think Josh might take the Ding A Ling Man!
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, Nicklow looks like a pretty tough kid with some good athleticism and skills. It will be nice to see him develop.
Right now, Joppy vs. Holmes; I'd take Holmes by UD (very ugly, very boring fight).
HOW ABOUT CYGAN VS PASCHALL WHO WINS THAT WAR
ReplyDeleteCygan
ReplyDeleteThis is a VERY tough one. Extremely so, in part due to the styles. Neither were great fighters, but they were both very good and this would have made for a very intriguing and evenly-matched bout. Whew...I'm going to have to really think on this one here!
ReplyDeleteOkay...I guess I'll go with the shorter Joppy by close decision, due in part to his speed. But let me tell you...I wouldn't bet much on it!
ReplyDelete* Sidenote - What a shame this fight never happened. I didn't consider either the "world champion" (Sorry, I don't recognize the alphabets, and we all know who the true 160.lb champion of the 90's/2000's was.) but both were good quality fighters, and it would have matched two TOP-flight contenders from the same area, roughly the same age, against one another. A bit like the Ohio fight between Harry Arroyo and Ray Mancini that never materialized.
P.S- What does "The Digital One's" computer spit-out/predict here? (Tough one! I almost guarantee you this one would have been about even-money/pick-em on the books!)
ReplyDeleteChris would lose in a heartbeat to Josh, then steal the money in his wallet you know like he does from fighters and promoters.
ReplyDeleteWow the last anonymous was heard on Midendorfus. Surprised he didn't respond with one of his classic comments yet.
ReplyDeleteChris where are you we need to hear what you got to say Mr KNOW IT ALL

ReplyDeleteWhat are the pre-requisites to get in the MD Hall Of Fame? How long do you have to be out of the sport and how do you get nominated?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
To tell you the truth, I don't know what the qualifications are. I don't think they have a five-year period like the International Boxing Hall of Fame, but I'm not sure. I will check and find out.
