Petersons Back in Action!

The undefeated Peterson Brothers of DC are looking to build on a busy and successful 2005.

In 2005, Anthony and Lamont Peterson were a combined 21-0 with 12 KO's. This year, the Petersons will try to take it to the next level.

According to their long-time trainer Barry Hunter, Lamont (overall record: 15-0, seven KO's) will make the first big test of the year as he faces veteran Courtney Burton of Benton Harbor, MI (21-5, 11 KO's) on February 17 at the Fed Ex Forum in Memphis, TN. This will be an ESPN2 telecast. Burton has lost his last three bouts to solid competition including Ebo Elder, Rolando Reyes and, in his last outing, the "Hispanic Causing Panic" Juan Lazcano.

It will be Anthony who chronologically will fight first in 2006, however. Anthony (overall record: 14-0, 10 KO's) will fight on January 28 in Tunica, MS against an opponent to be named.

  1. I seen Berrie Hunter yesterday while getting gas in Ft. Washington. He says both of his babies are ready for a top contender. He is quite upset with Shelly for wanting to bring a top flight trainer in to help with Lamont and Anthony. I think Berrie has did a decent job thus far. However, I do think he should accept all the help he can get. This pro stuff is a whole new ball game. Nothing like the amatures where he had others helping him along the way. Please Berrie, think of Lamont and Anthony, for they are the ones that this is all about. Its not about you. i have known you for 12 years now, I would never steer you wrong. Those young men need some professional trainers and cornermen. I know you care about them and I know you will do the right thing. Listen to Shelly Finkel! He means well...

  2. Hey Harold, Long Time. I thought you were going to come back and train. We miss you. You are one hell of a fighter. One of the best!!!! I agree with you about Barry. I too think he should get someone with more experiance in boxing to help with the Petererson brothers. I know that Barry has never boxed a day in his life, but the guy does do a great job with them kids. Im pretty sure Boogie is the man behind the scene. He was a very good boxer in his day and he does know the game very well. Anyways, looking forward to seeing you Harold back in action real soon-ok.

  3. Thanks to both for your comments.

Harold, I interviewed you a long time back when I was on WOL radio. I still have the Silver Gloves plaque you gave me from your victory there.

I hope you come back and train as well. You have a lot of talent and had a solid fan following that you can get back.

    Thanks again for writing in!

  4. As far as the subject of changing trainers, that's not always a great idea. When a boxer and a trainer have a special bond, it's hard to change horses in mid stream. Barry has been successful thus far. The Petersons trust him. If Finkel does bring in somebody, it should be as a second and not as a lead trainer.

  5. Well, the good side of all this is that Berry will be able to concertrate more on his gym Bald Eagle, for ever since the Peterson brothers turned pro. Bald Eagle has really went down hill concerning the amatures. In fact, they only had 1 boxer qualify for the Silver Gloves Tounrament. I am personally tired of hearing all the negative jokes about them not making any noise at the local boxing shows. I believe they will make a comeback sometime soon in the near future. They have some really good trainers down there... Boogie, Marshall, Dale and Big Twin. Trust me they will not be at the bottom for long. They will find themselves some good tough boxers and make some champions. Just wait and see...

  6. The last time I spoke with Barry, he was in the process of opening a new gym in Fort Washington, Md. He did say that a few were trying to steal his fighters from him. I do not think he has anything to worry about. He raised them kids. He even told me that it was him that taught them peterson brothers how to read and write. Those boys would still be homeless if it was not for him. I think Barry even got them an apartment in Oxon Hill MD. They will be world champions within the next three years. I hope that Shelly Finkel atleast lets Barry be a part of them getting to the top. It was him who fed, taught, schooled, and got them an apartment. He deserves to be treated better.

  7. Barry aint going nowhere. He will be a part of those boys future no matter what. It was him who raised them boys. He thinks of them as his own sons. Yeah, I know he may have rubbed some people the wrong way, but he was only looking out for the best interest of those boys. Barry said that he deserved more money for himself as a trainer. I think he should get more. He had them boys from the time they were 4 years old. They need to sit down with him and guarentee him that they are going to stay with him until the end. Barry should stay involved even if he is not head trainer. I wish him all the luck in the world.

  8. Hi Gary, what an interesting morning getting up reading your boxing comments. I love it and I must say that you are doing a great job. I did get to see the Peterson brothers box on several different occassions. They both won and looked like polished boxers. No big hitters, but they sure looked sharp. It does not suprise me to hear bout Barry Hunter. Sometimes in life things work out for the best and we see the clear picture at a later date. I just wonder who is the top notch trainer that will be taking over. I did read about it on 24 hour boxing news, but they never mentioned the new trainers name.

  9. Let me clarify.

In no way did I insinuate that Barry Hunter would be removed from the Peterson camp. That came from readers comments.

I even said that I didn't think that would be a good idea.

But I do appreciate all the comments on this post.

  10. That stuff is not true, Barry has them both fighting in feb. One of them is fighting a pit bull name Burton. If it is true, I think they should have signed with Don King in the first place. They would be crazy to disrupt that camp, they have Barry and Boogie working and everything seems just fine. They do not need any outside help. That bull got started on a web site called Boxers Delight. Vegas.com I read it three days ago about them replacing Barry but I do not think Shelly Finkel will do such a thing. If it aint broke dont fix it. Barry & Boogie are doing a great job. Two champions I see in the near future> THE PETERSON BROTHERS
