Results From Convention Center and Las Vegas!

Once again, thanks to Juan Marshall of ProAm Fight Talk for his coverage of Saturday night's Keystone Boxing card at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.   Here are the results for those of you (like me) who missed out.

DC welterweight Dusty Harrison remained undefeated with a first-round stoppage of Reggie Nash.  The bout was stopped at 2:32 of the round.  Harrison raises his record to 7-0, four KO's.  Nash of Grand Rapids, MI, is now 10-30-1, two KO's.

DC-based middleweight "King Shango" Ivan Ziglar won by third-round TKO over Jimmy LeBlanc of Weymouth, MA.  Ziglar dropped LeBlanc twice in the second round before it was stopped 39 seconds into the third.

Junior middleweight Harold "Sweet Lee " Parker scored a second-round TKO over Antonio Sadler of Columbia, SC.  The bout was stopped at 2:59 of the round.  Parker is 2-0, two KO's while Sadler's record is even at 1-1-1, one KO.

Thomas "Top Dog" Williams, Jr. of Fort Washington, MD won a first-round TKO over Ariel Espinal of  Brooklyn, NY.  Originally, this fight was off the card because Espinal weighed in 20 pounds over the light heavyweight limit of 175.  Espinal lost 10 pounds overnight to keep the bout on the card, only to hurt his shoulder in the first round.   Williams is now 9-0, six KO's while Espinal falls to 8-22-3, four KO's.

Baltimore, MD super middleweight "The Golden Greek" Elias Bouloubassis scored a first-round TKO over William Armstead of Columbus, OH.  Bouloubassis dropped Armstead three times before the bout was stopped at 1:01 of the first.  Bouloubassis is now 7-0-5, five KO's.

DC middleweight Kevin Borders won his pro debut with a four-round majority decision over Eric Marion of Columbus, OH.  Borders won by scores of 38-38, 39-37 (twice).  Borders was also making his pro debut.

Upper Marlboro, MD heavyweight Duane Mobley scored a first-round TKO over Ryan Shay of Rock Hill, SC.  The bout was stopped at 2:56 of the round.  Mobley is 4-0, three KO's.  Shay falls to  5-15, four KO's.

In the opening bout, Charlotte Hall, MD middleweight Josh Rupard needed just 36 seconds to stop Donnie Holden of Canton, OH.  Rupard is 2-0, two KO's.  Holden is 0-7.

Meanwhile at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NVon the undercard of Danny Garcia's upset of Amir Khan, Salisbury, MD's Fernando Guerrero won a 10-round unanimous decision over Jose Medina of Tilton, NH in a super middleweight contest.  Guerrero dropped Medina early in the contest and went on to the easy win. Two judges scored a shutout for Guerrero, who is now 24-1, 18 KO's.  Medina falls to 17-11-1, seven KO's.

This is not building prospects. This is not good matchmaking. This is not good professional boxing. Good matchmaking is when you want a fighter to win but you test him. You give him a 60/40 chance to win but sometimes the other guy wins too. It's not 1st round KO after 1 round KO after 1st round KO. You want your fighter to put in some rounds and win the fight, but learn something while doing just that. This card was nothing more than record building and squash fights. These types of cards don't make boxing fans, they make boxing fans non-boxing fans. Pitiful!

Anonymous said...

Who promoted this card? Jim Kelly? Marcus Luck? Cedric Harden? Stacy Goodson? Edward Mendy? Man this is some backwater bullshit not anything fit for DC!

Brian said...

Then don't go simple as that we try to make fans happy, not the non fans. Seemed to me that just about everyone there loved dusty's early round tko. I appreciate the tutorial on effective matchmaking,

Tell us please what is fit for DC?

Brian did an excellent job. The crowd loved the knockouts and cheered every fight. The ringcard girls were as phat as all out-doors. The DC rapper performing live. Brian put together a card that more than satisfied the paying customers. Throughout the evening, fans were asking over and over again, when is the next scheduled fights in DC. Someone is doing something right! They keep coming back for more. Brian Dillon knows boxing and obviously knows what the fans want. He makes sure that all the fighters are treated well, money, food, hotel, etc...He's an honest decent guy who cares about his reputation. Bad mouth him all you want, but sold-out boxing events tell us otherwise.

The Keystone team is awesome to work with/for. Gene Molovinsky is the easiest person to work for. Raymond Jackson (Bubbles) we disagree a lot, but we are trying to get to the same place. The fans, the support staff, the DC Commission, the fighter teams are paramount to successful boxing in DC. Lastly the blogs; with Juan Marshall and spear headed by the games best place for Beltway News Gary Digital Williams. We all need each other to keep this going

Stay tuned there is plenty more to come.

Everybody that got paid to lay down layed down. Whats everybody so upset about.Oh you didn't know! When the fighters are paying other fighters to come here and fight you know boxing has reached an all time low,and thats whats going on.stop going to these bullshit shows, its criminal. Its also happening in va and md. atleast md looks at records

ACW said...

A showcase for the Beltway Boxers to be sure, but I liked the KOs. And the boutsheet was very well done.

Its ok to build a fighters record thats boxing but when the whole show is one sided thats where people have a problem. I picked every fight at home and i was right , so why pay money to see this.

Brian said...

Well I would love to put on local barn burners, but local guys will hardly fight local guys, and the visiting team fighters will NEVER be filled with elite fighters, because the finances don't meet there demands. So we do what we can while keeping the fan base happy.

Bubbles? Do you mean Fart Bubbles? Come on Brian, you owe me money from my fight against Bucky Banzerio!

Fighters should not have to sell tickets in order to get on the show. These guys want to be able to focus on training for the fight and some have jobs. They don't want to run around trying to collect money from friends/family. I was told that a boxer was told to sell $4,000 worth of tickets in order to get on the show for a 4 rd fight. This is just wrong. If the promoter can't afford to give the show they shouldn't do it. These fighters train hard & yrs ago fighters didn't hv to sell tickets. Pls DC get some promoters with some money instead of these welfare promoters.

Brian said...

That was actually a different promoter who uses that tactic, not keystone

Why does this have to be a racial issue? The goal is to keep boxing active in DC. Why can't we support those who are trying to do.

We can't be like other cities that wear their boxers out by fighting gym wars in their own cities. On my old TV series "Boxing Spotlight, "The Fight Doctor" Jerome Spears did an interview with Sharmba Mitchell and Derrell Coley where they emphasized that being the best in DC was not what their goal was. They wanted to be the best in the world. That's why they didn't have a lot of meetings with local guys. They only had them when they knew the bout would benefit them.

Mitchell only fought three other locals in his career prior to being champion -- Keely Thompson in 1991, Kenny Baysmore in 1993 and Lyndon Paul Walker in 1994. He didn't fight another local until he defended his title against Reggie Green in 1999. He could have fought local journeymen like Horace Watterson or Alphonso Dyer. He could have fought Green five years earlier. None of those bouts would have benefited him.

Coley didn't fight a lot of local boxers either. The one he did fight -- winning over Darryl Latimore -- helped establish him. That win was followed by another victory over Saoul Mamby and then..inactivity for a year because of managerial issues. The only other local Coley fought was Watterson. They didn't care about being the best in DC.

That's as it should be. It should be the Beltway against the world..until there's nothing left but us!

got to have white men on these cards, can't buy a ticket with an independence card

Air Ride said...

The show was great! Not a single person in the crowd complained. There was no fighting outside of the ring. The rapper-dude was a nice surprise. The ring card girls had plenty of meat on them. The ticket prices were more than fair. The only thing I wish was different: I wish Gary Digital Williams was there!!!

Understand what keystone is doing and its cool to showcase local talent, every promoter does it. The onlyt hing that is missing on these shows is a main event with experienced fighters. Essentially, the bouts presented are the equivalent of non-TV bouts, but there needs to be at least one finale of two experienced fighters that will have a competitive fight. Agree with the earlier poster that fight can be 60/40 or even 70/30 type fight. But its hard for a devoted boxing fan to get excited about a card full of 99/1 fights. You guys are doing good work, just need to make a slight adjustment and you'll bring in more customers.

Andy said...

How in the world can they bring in more customers when they are sold-out? Then why would they spend more money on a more known pro when they don't have to. Looks to me that Keystone have found a great way to be successful without losing money.

Anonymous said...

actually, you are both wrong in away. Gene will be the first to tell you that this is not about established fighters. its about giving the new lovcal guys a chance to start.he would be happy to have all 4 rounders on the show. trust me, he aint getting rich off these shows.

i was at this sorry excuse for a "pro" card. I will be looking into filing with the state. If Keystone boxing is defending the matchmaking of this dangerous nature....then we got a problem. I want my mon ey back and I think we all deserve it back. Hey keystone....amateur hour is over. fix yourself before you get one of these "boxers" killed. Play time is over.

the show wasn't sold out. thats not true. thank heavens. this has more to do with safety. and upholding some sort of semblance as professionals. keystone needs to seriously change or get the heck away from dc.

Rita and John said...

The show was Sold Out, the remaining tickets were purchased at the event. I was there and you obviously were not. In fact, I know you were not because I watched the crowd enjoy each and every fight. Not a single person in the entire Convention Centre complained. I was there until the very end, people did not want to leave even when the fights were over with. MPD coupled with Security had to order people out. I along with several other attended an after hour party hosted by Mr. Henry Jones and that too was bursting at the seems. Mr. Jones provided food and drinks for well over 250 fight fans. All the boxers attended, included the ones who lost. Brian Dillon did an excellent job of match-making and 99.9 percent was very happy with such. I'd give this show an A+, the place was clean, the parking was fine, the fights were exciting, the ring entrance had everyone on their feet, the ring girls were phat as can be, the tickets prices remained affordable, and youngins loved Little Wayne! Keystone Boxing is without a doubt the top promoter around. Hopefully, he will ignore the jealous comments and return to the same location soon.

hi rita-great show but that was not little wayne-that was dc rapper shy glizzy-lol

Anonymous said...

why do u guys respond to the negative bs, it just one jealous hater. everyone nos that gen and keystone be putting on the best shows in dc ever was.

Anonymous said...

It's not hate and negative, it's constructive feedback (for some of us). Bringing up the young guys is great, but they fights need to be semi-competitive or you need at least one experienced headliner, even if its a old guy coming back (Clarence Vinson, Sugar Poo, etc.)

Anonymous said...

u hatin like crazy. lol its so easy to tell. ha ha ha hatin on the kid. lol

Anonymous said...

You people posting the comments can't possibly say this was a good professional card.
You are people who were involved with the promotion and your just trying to massage your own EGO'S.
Gary you remove some peoples comments .You know this card was garbage and yet you still uphold it and say thats how professional boxers are built. The opponets don't have to have a good record but they should be able to fight a littlebit.
Really dissapointing that one of the pillars of the local boxing community has to get in the gutter with the trash.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Every opponent on this card except Josh Rupard's opponent had at least one win over SOMEBODY. To me, that means they may be able to fight "a little bit.".

Maybe that's all they can do against the locals.

Gary Digital Williams said...

Those comments I removed contained personal threats against people. Those were truly unnecessary and added nothing to the discussion. That trash I won't get into the gutter with.

Anonymous said...

either you don't know or you are intentionally overloking the fact that these people that have a win
were probobly given the win so commissions or people like you
can say their credible opponets.
It's obvious nobodys changing your mind so go on pretending.
You and your blog have made some of the boxing in the area interesting at times but you are starting to slide over the other side Digital.
All you have to do is ask and I'll throw you a rope and you can pull yourself back up the mountain and over to the true side,
Just keeping it real Mr Williams.

Keystone had a down card but if you look at their history, by and large they have usually made good fights. I'm sure Gene will step it up in August.;

Look half of you know nothing about boxing. Gary has forgotten more than you turds will ever learn. He fought in the amateurs and had a record of 33-2, with 29 KOS. Ok just some humor, but GDW is doing a service for the DMV and you turds need to shut your pieholes up.

(The real deal)

A great main event for keystone would be Jimmy Lange VS Perry Ballard again.
Wow,couldn't wait to see that one.

Anonymous said...

BULLSHIT... EVERY sorry ass promoter in DMV make fighters hustle tickets or pay their way onto shows! They won't ever be able to rely on tickets sales to put a legitimate show together due to these thrifty ass promoters! Come on Brian "the expert" Dillion not everyone who reads this blog is nieve. D.C. will never become known for boxing, or even come close to the west coast promoters with these mickey mouse club shows. Consider a career change! Your not the big man on campus you think you are... Your a joke!

Anonymous said...

It's easy... Get a bigger venue dumb ass! Gene owns a business, he should be doing this to really bring boxing back to D.C. not nickel and dime bums fighters from the south to fill his wallet. He could easily put on a great show that would sell a ton of tickets and have all fan friendly fights... But that would mean he would have to do it the old fashion way, front all the money then make it back on ticket and concession sales! Put real fights together and tickets will sell, as opposed to tickets being hustled by the fighters who struggle to rub two nickels together.

Brian said...

I am far from the big man on campus, I am just a guy trying to carve out a little piece of pie , and I am far from an expert, I love learning new stuff everyday

I am so sick of half ass shows being put on by these cheap promoters. Shitty matches made by match makers like Brian Dillion and people saying that the fans are happy with the shows. You say fans want to see a knockout... We do want to see a knockout, but not against a boxer with a piss poor record who is expected to be knocked out. I would rather see bouts that are close and exciting to watch. As a person who knows a lot about boxing, I'm sick and tired of seeing weak commissions allowing these lopsided bouts to happen. At least the Panella looks at records in MD. Not saying those fights are any better, but at least the "opponent" has more of a fighting chance. I understand record building and the importance of it, but when you make it so blatant that the average fan that doesn't even understand boxing knows that it's happening it sad...sad for the sport. Dusty will be a great fighter and was perfectly fit to be the main event...let's build him up! Keep making him the main event and give him the right opponents, but for God's sake make the undercards more competitive especially while Dusty is still young and not expecting alot of money. What will the undercards look like when Dusty blows up and you really have to spend money on an opponent? That time is coming.

Sincerely,
concerned boxing fan

p.s. Dusty keep up the great work. Even if the bouts on your shows are awful, I will continue to support you by buying tickets!
