Golden Boy Promotions Working on June 30 Card at Verizon Center, Says ESPN.com!

It looks like whatever problems Golden Boy Promotions may have had with the District of Columbia Boxing and Wrestling Commission back in December will not keep the company from the idea of staging another card in the Nation's Capitol.

ESPN.com's Dan Rafael is reporting that Golden Boy is working on a card that would be scheduled for June 30 at the Verizon Center. The card would feature Beltway Boxers Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell and "Mr." Gary Russell, Jr., despite both boxers having bouts scheduled for April. If the card does come together, it would mark the FIRST time that Russell has competed in his home area as a pro!

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told Rafael that his company is working on a number of cards including the May 19 rematch between Lamont Peterson and Amir Khan that is slated for Las Vegas. However Schaefer says that it is good for the sport for more cities to be involved in the big fight mix.

"There are a lot of fights in Vegas coming up and it's OK to spread it around, and it's important for the sport to have fights outside of Las Vegas. You look at a place like Los Angeles or Washington, D.C., or New York or places in Texas like El Paso or San Antonio or Houston. I think it's important to have fights in these towns on a regular basis. I think it helps the sport and the [television] ratings as well."

I thought Lamont also had it in his contract for the Khan re-match, that Golden Boy would have to promote his next fight (win or lose) in D.C.

Interesting that they'd come to D.C. without Lamont, but I won't be complaining as long as we get to see Mitchel and Russell. Hopefully Russell actually fights someone decent for a change, and doesn't get spoon-fed another Mexican cab-driver.

Good luck filling up the Verizon Center. When you add in the floor seating, there may be a lot of empty seating blocks when the cameras pan. One advantage, though, will be improved sightlines from last time (as if they could do worse.)

I think because Peterson's rematch with Khan is in May, it would be too soon to put him on a card in June.

Anthony Peterson, on the other hand, could possibly make an appearance on this card -- if he is not involved in the May 19th card in Vegas.

This is awesome that GBP is willing to come back here and showcase some of Boxing's best in the NATION'S Capital

So much for those DC "experts" who said DC Boxing was dead..haha

When the smoke clears, GBP comes back, Peterson gets biggest payday ever, and even Jimmy Lange show attendance is up from last time.

What about Jimmy Lange being a part of the June 30 card. He does have 2 belts that he could put on the line. Is it a possibility

I don't know if Lange could be on that show (don't know if it could be worked out w/ ICE Productions-Digital?), but it would surely be good for attendance.

Oh come on w/ this Jimmy Lange crap already. And quit fooling yourself. Tell Jimmy Lange to call Joey Gilbert.

and tell Joey Gilbert to call his pharmacist.

Ice Promotions and Jimmy Lange Boxing are really one and the same. I think Lange would jump at the chance.

Lange sucks, on reason to go is Gary Russell Jr!
